The Mevlevihane, the only one of its kind in Üsküdar, was established in 1792–93 by Sultanzâde Halil Numan Dede, the postnişin (head dervish) of the Galata Mevlevihanesi, by adding a semahane (ritual hall) on top of his own house near Fatih Street.

This structure, serving a different function for dervishes coming to Istanbul from the Anatolian side, stands out as both a semahane and a tomb. The tomb is on the ground floor, the semahane on the upper floor; among the annexes are a selamlık (reception hall), kitchen, dervish cells, and harem quarters.
